Bosley Cloud Walk
Introduction
This is only a short walk but you get plenty of bang for your buck. You’ll start from Timbersbrook Car Park, which is free to park on. It opens from 9am and shuts at 5pm in the winter and 8pm in the summer. After just half an hour of walking you’ll be able to enjoy some great views over the surrounding Cheshire countryside. Once you’ve navigated round the top of Bosley Cloud, you’ll head back through the woods before heading back into Timbersbrook.
There are some mountain biking routes on the Cloud. Where possible, we have tried to stick to paths that are for pedestrians only for this walk. It’s best to keep your dog under close supervision though, as we found that some cyclists didn’t stick to their designated paths.
Timbersbrook
Leave Timbersbrook car park via the footpath at the end that takes you onto Timbersbrook picnic area. Follow the path through the picnic area until it exits onto Tunstall Road. From here, turn left and continue along the road as it travels up the bank.
After roughly 100m, look to the right for a wooden footpath sign directing you up some steps into the woods. There are 136 steps to conquer here, which is the steepest part of the walk. If you think you’ll struggle here, carry on up the main road before turning right onto Gosberryhole Lane. This will take you up to where the steps emerge via a shallower but longer slope.
From the top of the steps, turn to the right and follow the path as it winds up the hill, going past the cottage on the right. Not long after, the path splits in two. You’ll want to head left and go through the gate surrounded by National Trust signage for Bosley Cloud. When you reach the T-junction after another 100m, turn left and follow the path up to the dry stone wall.
Bosley Cloud
At this point the path splits off into several different trails. Picking a trail through the middle will cut through the woodland and get you straight to the top. We opted to take the slightly longer route to the left though, as it was for pedestrians only. You’ll also get to see some great views of the Cheshire Plain about halfway along this stretch. From here, just continue along the edge of Bosley Cloud until you reach the trig point and toposcope at the top.
This is a a great one to do on a clear day, as when you’re at the top you’ll be able to see for miles. To the north and west you’ll be able to see Jodrell Bank, Liverpool, and Prestatyn, while in the other direction is the nearby Roaches. You can even see the not-so-nearby Long Mynd to the southwest.
Avona
Once you’re ready, carry on along the main trail as it leads down the the other side of Bosley Cloud. Keep your eyes peeled on this stretch for the wallabies and alpacas that live on the neighbouring holiday home site. You’ll eventually reach a tarmac road after coming down some steps. Turn right and follow the road up the hill before turning right onto the public footpath at the end of the road.
From here, follow the path down through the woods, keeping the dry stone wall and fields on your left. This path is supposed to be for pedestrians only, but we encountered some cyclists here. Eventually you’ll get to the spot where the path split off into different routes through the Cloud. Once you’re at this point, it’s just a case of retracing your steps to get back to Timbersbrook car park.
What To Do After
If it’s a nice day, why not take some food to enjoy at Timbersbrook Picnic Area before you jump back in the car? If you’d prefer not to dine al fresco, there are several dog friendly places to eat in neighbouring Congleton. The highly rated Castle Inn is the closest from Timbersbrook.
There are other options available if you’re not Congleton-bound. The Harrington Arms at Bosley, the Knot Inn near Rudyard Lake, and The Talbot in Biddulph all serve food and welcome dogs.
