Fida 8m Retractable Lead Review

Quick Verdict

For the price, the Fida Retractable Lead is a solid choice if you want to give your dog more freedom on their walk. It’s well built, offers an effective lock and is comfortable to use. The retraction isn’t brilliant due to occasional twisting issues, but aside from that there’s not much to complain about. If you’re after a dependable lead for a bargain price, then you don’t need to look much further.

What is the Fida Retractable Lead?

The Fida Retractable Dog Lead is designed to give your dog extra room to explore when you’re out walking together. In this review we’ll be looking at the 8m long version in black, which is suitable for larger dogs. However, Fida also do a 5m long model designed for smaller dogs. The 8m lead also comes in blue or white, while the 5m comes in a range of colours.

The housing of the lead is made of a sturdy plastic, while the lead itself is made of high strength nylon tape and features reflective strips. The locking mechanism is operated by a single button on the top of the lead.

What We Liked

The build quality of the lead is great. The robust plastic housing means that the lead can handle being dropped or banged without issue and it’s also easy to clean. It’s ergonomically designed and features an anti-slip soft handle, making it comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The generous sizing of the handle coupled with the anti slip material means the lead always feels secure in your grip. The reflective strips on the tape are also a nice touch but they aren’t a standout feature – we rarely use this lead for night time walks.

The 8 metre distance afforded by this lead is perfect for us. There’s enough length to let Flynn explore to his heart’s content, but we’re still close enough to get him under control quickly when we need to. While the lead has some weight to it, I wouldn’t say it was heavy. Considering it’s holding 8 metres of tape, it’s relatively light. It definitely isn’t cumbersome to the point where it’s uncomfortable to use for long periods of time.

The locking mechanism is really simple to operate and can be done by just using your thumb. It consists of a push button built into a slider. Keeping the push button down will lock the lead. Pushing the slider forward will then lock the push button in this position, allowing you to keep the lead locked without having to keep your thumb on the button. Flicking the slider back towards you will release the lead and make it retractable again.

It takes a little getting used to, but it becomes second nature before you know it. We also like that when the lead is flicked back into retractable mode, it doesn’t do it immediately if there is tension on the line. So if you have your dog on a short locked leash and they’re pulling, the lead won’t extend until they stop and let the lead go slack. We’ve found this helpful in encouraging Flynn to stop pulling while walking.

The Drawbacks

While the lead is marketed as tangle free, we have encountered occasional issues with the lead getting twisted, moreso in wet weather. If the tape gets too twisted, it can stop the lead from retracting. This has only happened a handful of times, and we have used this lead a lot over the past year (it’s our go-to when we go on longer walks out in the countryside). It can be frustrating trying to untwist the lead when you’re trying to get your dog under control quickly, but you’re usually able to rectify the problem within a few seconds.

Conclusion

If you’re after an affordable extendable lead to give your dog more room to roam, then the Fida Retractable Dog Lead is a strong option. It’s a resilient yet lightweight bit of kit that’s comfortable enough to use on longer hikes. The 8m length strikes the right balance between being far enough for your dog to explore and close enough for you to regain close control easily. On rare occasions you will encounter problems with lead twisting but these are easily fixed. Overall, we’d heartily recommend the Fida Retractable Lead to those looking for an extendable lead on a budget.
