Flexi New Classic Lead Review
Quick Verdict
When it comes to walking with your dog, having a dependable leash is paramount for both your pet’s safety and your peace of mind. Enter the Flexi New Classic Dog Lead, a versatile and reliable companion that has impressed me since we started using it. In this review, I’ll delve into the pros and cons of this popular retractable dog leash, helping you decide if it’s the right choice for your furry friend.
Flexi New Classic Details
This lead from German manufacturer Flexi has been our go-to leash for long dog walks since we bought it. The one we’ve been using (and are basing this review on) is the large 8 metre length tape lead for large dogs up to 50kg. This isn’t the only model available though. There are 4 different lead sizes to choose from (XS, S, M, and L) – which one you pick depends on your dog’s weight.
There are then different lead lengths available. The 8m one we have is the longest, with the other options being 3m and 5m. Once you’ve settled on a length, you can choose between a cord or a tape. The cord is less prone to tangling, but isn’t as strong as the tape. If you have larger, stronger dogs, the tape lead is the recommended option. If you have a smaller breed that’s less likely to pull, then you’re better going with the cord lead.
You can also buy optional attachments that clip onto the lead housing, such as a poo bag holder and an LED light. We don’t have any of these attachments though, so they won’t be covered in this review.
Pros of the Flexi New Classic
Obviously, the main selling point of the Flexi New Classic is its adjustable length. It allows you to extend the lead up to an impressive 8 metres, providing ample room for your canine companion to explore and roam freely. This flexibility is particularly beneficial when transitioning from crowded urban streets to open parks or when accommodating dogs of varying sizes. Whether you need to keep your dog close in busy areas or grant them more freedom in open spaces, this leash adapts effortlessly to your needs.
Durability is another hallmark of this lead. Constructed with high-quality materials, this leash can withstand the rigours of daily use and the wear and tear that comes with it. I’ve had it dragged through bushes, held underwater, and dropped it on hard ground more times than I care to admit, but it’s still in good working condition. Long story short, this lead can take a lot of punishment.
The Flexi New Classic is also really easy to use. The one-handed braking and locking system is both intuitive and efficient. With a simple press of the brake button, you can instantly stop your dog in their tracks or lock the leash at a desired length. This feature is particularly handy in situations where quick control is needed, such as when encountering unexpected distractions or obstacles during a walk.
One of the things that we’ve been really impressed by is how well the lead retracts. Even though we have the tape style lead and not the cord, it barely ever gets twisted to the point that it won’t retract properly. We originally bought this lead to replace the Fida model we were using at the time, after the Fida started to have worsening issues with retraction, and the difference has been night and day.
The ergonomic handle of the Flexi New Classic is designed with the comfort of the owner in mind. It fits comfortably in the hand, reducing strain during extended walks. The large lead we have doesn’t feel too heavy despite the length it accommodates. As a small bonus, the leash includes reflective stickers on both sides of the handle, enhancing visibility during nighttime outings. It’s also well priced – you can pick one up from around £20, which is slightly more than the budget leashes on the market, but you’re getting a better quality lead.
Cons Of The Flexi New Classic
This is a really great lead, but as it always is with a retractable lead, you’re sacrificing close control for the ability to let your dog have more freedom. While you can bring your dog in close with the Flexi New Classic, you don’t get the same level of control as you do with a traditional two-handed halter style lead. If you’re focusing on working with your dog to walk nicely and ignore distractions, you will be better off with the halter lead when training.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Flexi New Classic dog lead is a reliable and versatile leash that offers freedom for your four-legged companion during walks. Its durability, ease of use, and thoughtful design make it a top choice, and it’s competitively priced to boot. If you’re in search of a lead that strikes a balance between control and freedom, the Flexi New Classic is certainly worth considering for your daily adventures with your furry friend.
