The Miners Arms

The Miners Arms

Overview

Hidden away in the sleepy village of Carsington, this cozy country pub welcomes both walkers and their four-legged friends. It’s only a stone’s throw away from Carsington Water, so it’s ideally placed for a post-walk meal. The Miners Arms offers an extensive menu featuring dishes made from locally grown fresh produce, along with a great selection of refreshing drinks. While they accept walk-ins, we’d thoroughly recommend booking in advance, especially if you’re visiting on a weekend.

What To Expect

Outside the pub, there’s a decent sized car park to pull up at if you’ve driven here. You can actually walk to The Miners Arms from the reservoir trail – when you’re at the top of the lake, follow the public footpath that crosses the main road and leads into Carsington village. There’s also a generously sized beer garden outside if you’d prefer to enjoy your refreshments in the sun. If you do choose to sit outside, there are water bowls for dogs thoughtfully placed by each table.

Inside, there’s a mix of large and small tables to choose from depending on how many are in your party. While dogs aren’t allowed in the restaurant section of the pub, they are more than welcome in the bar and snug. There’s even a little dog bar where they’ve stocked water, blankets and biscuits you can help yourself to. Despite us arriving last minute on a Sunday afternoon, the team were able to get us a great table tucked away in a quiet corner of the snug. This meant that Flynn had plenty of space to stretch out without being in anyone else’s way.

The food we ordered was delicious, well-priced and arrived quickly – our only complaint was that there wasn’t more of it! That’s not to say that the portions weren’t generous given the price we paid – we just enjoyed it so much we could’ve ordered another round! We visited on a Sunday, and we all opted for the hot roast meat sandwiches with roast potatoes and gravy. We also ordered some broccoli cheese and pigs in blankets on the side, which were well worth it. There’s also a good range of drinks to choose from, with several local ales on tap.

What's Nearby?

The obvious walking route to go on from here is around Carsington Water. There’s a 12km route that goes all the way around the reservoir, or there are a couple of shorter trails available down at the bottom end near the dam.

The Miner’s Arms is also only a 20 minute drive from the Derbyshire Peaks, so you’re well placed to visit sights such as Robin Hoods Stride and Nine Ladies Stone Circle.

If you’d prefer to wander around a market town instead, Carsington conveniently lies between Ashbourne to the west and Matlock to the north.
